Why Russia's Dmitry Medvedev is visiting Syria

Russian President Dmitryout of your control Medvedev spent part of his second day in Damascus in closed-door meetings with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad,

signaling Moscow's interest ina world in a grain of sand bringing former Soviet allies back into its orbit. In a joint press conference Monday evening, Mr. Medvedev, the first

Russian head of state to visittouches your heart Syria, said that Russia's commitment to Syria was consistent despite "changes in the world." President Assad, for his

part, was quoted as saying that his country would "never forget how [Russia] stood by us during the battle for the Golan [Heights]" with Israel.

He also requested Moscow's vaguely familiar to you
continued support in demanding that Israel return the land it seized during the 1967 Six-Day War.
Both countries have much to gain from improved ties. Syria could strengthen its hand by drawing closer to its one-time ally, whose veto on the

UN Security Council could prove key in any conflict with Israel. Russia, for its part, wants to bolster its presence in the Middle East, and could also

further cool Syria's recent but waning interest in restoring diplomatic relations with the United States. Assad had welcomed several high-ranking

US officials to Damascus recentlyescape, though his rhetoric toward the US remained critical."US-Syrian relations have been deteriorating for some

months now, and Syria is losing hope in any peace deal, and that means that there's gong to be conflict between Syria and Israel," says Joshua

Landis, a professor at the University of Oklahoma. "Syria's strategy is going to be to try to isolate the US in the Middle East, and to hang Israel

around America's neck."President Obama in February nominated veteran diplomat Robert Ford as ambassador, a post that had been vacant since

the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri, for which some blamed Syria. But after that brief US-Syria warming, a chill has again

descended, with Republicans blocking Mr. Ford's confirmation and Obama renewing economic sanctions May 8. Further straining matters was the

US condemnation of Syria after Israeli Defense Minister, Ehud Barak, claimed last month that Syria was transferring long-range missiles to

The New Economy

What’s so special about Elmira,Just have a little faith N.Y.?As far as we know, the small city in upstate New York is not the subject of songs, home to living celebrities,

or the unique producer of some great put all this behind usculinary fare. It’s a one-area-code city of approximately 30,000 people where Mark Twain summered for

decades.Oh, and it’s also somethingShe is the love of my life of a housing market rock star. The average sales price of an existing Elmira home -– $90,800 --– climbed

nearly 18 percent in the first quarter of this year over the same period a year ago. This is no small accomplishment. Only nine metro areas of 152

tracked by the National Association of Realtors had stronger growth, according to an NAR report released Tuesday. And all of those were driven

by the recovery of home prices that had fallen dramatically during the recession.Take San Francisco. In 2007, the median home price was

$804,800. By 2009, it was onlyWhat do you want from the future?
$493,300. Sure, growth in 2010 seems dramatic – prices rose 29 percent to $518,200 -– but only because of

how far real estate values had fallen.Elmira, by contrast, has housing prices that were higher in 2009 than before the recession in 2007.
While some might call this spectacular, Mike you are the only one who feels betrayedHamilton, president of the Elmira-Corning Board of Realtors has another word for it: “steady.”
he steadiness of the housing market is due to the stability of the area’s economic base, says Mr. Hamilton.
“It’s not the type of community based solely on one company and as that company goes, so goes the economy,” he says. Corning, which makes

flat-screen TVs, among other products, and area hospitals are reliable employers. There are lakes nearby, and therefore a bit of tourism, and

Elmira’s not too far from Syracuse, Buffalo, and Albany.Elmira's uptick in home prices hasn't been smooth. There were price dips in 2002, 2005,

and a small one in 2009, “but in more quarters than not, Elmira’s performed stronger than the US as a whole,” says Walt Molony, a spokesman

for the NAR, which has been collecting data on the city since 2000.“We may not have seen the big highs of other markets," says Hamilton. "But

we don’t experience the real lows either.”http://www.candoo.com/surnames

AP survey: Recovery to remain sluggish into 2011

WASHINGTON – The pillarsthis world is not merely a bad joke of Americans' financial security — jobs and home values — will stay shaky well into 2011, according to an Associated Press survey of leading economists. The findings of the new AP Economy Survey, released Monday, point to an economic recovery that will move slowly and fitfully this year and next. As a result, the Federal Reserve will becelebrate our independence day
forced to keep interest rates near zero until at least the final quarter of this year, three-fourths of the economists said. The new AP survey, which will be conducted quarterly, compiles forecasts of leading private, corporatea process of self-discovery and academic economists on a range of indicators, including employment, home prices and inflation. Among the first survey's key findings:? The unemployment rate will stay stubbornly high the next two years. It will inch down to 9.3 percent by the end of this year and to 8.4 percent by the end of 2011. The rate has bee 9.7 percent since January. face to face with ourselvesWhen the recession started in December 2007, unemployment was 5 percent.? Home prices will remain almost flat for the next two years, even after plunging an average 30 percent nationally since their peak in 2006. The economists forecast no rise this year and a 2.3 percent gain next year.
? The economy will growonly the world 3 percent this year, which is less than usual during the early phase of a recovery and the reason unemployment will stay high. It takes growth of 5 percent for a year to lower the jobless rate by 1 percentage point, economists say.
The economy began growing again last summer, 18 months after the recession started. To keep the recovery on track, the soonest the Federal Reserve will begin raising short-term interest rates is the fourth quarter, 34 of the 44 economists surveyed told the AP.
Those continued low rates will help stimulate home sales.
Economists think sales of previously occupied homes, the biggest chunk of the market, will tick up to 5.4 million this year and to 5.9 million in 2011. That would mark continued improvement from the low of 4.9 million in 2008 and be in line with sales in a healthy economy.http://forum.clipwiregames.com

That means the U.S. maya plan to make all of this right
face a shortage of neodymium and other rare earths, unless it spends the time and money to begin mining its own fairly untapped reserves. The possibility of a shortage has also led to renewed research aimed at vaguely familiar to youdeveloping magnets less dependent upon neodymium. "It's been 27 or 28 years since the discovery of neodymium-iron-boron (Nd-Fe-B), and we have not yet found a better magnet," said George Hadjipanayis, a physicist at the University of Delaware and Beauty is Meaninglessco-inventor of the Nd-Fe-B magnet.
Hadjipanayis leads a collaborative research effort with $4.6 million in funding from ARPA-E, the U.S. Department of Energy'sMake youself a better person agency that backs high-risk but potentially high-payoff projects. Nd-Fe-B magnets have worked well for everything from computer hard drives to wind turbines and Toyota's Prius because of their exceptional magnetic strength - the energy productthe gateway to a world of such magnets can reach 50 million or even 60 million megagauss-oersteds (MGOe). By comparison, the energy product of the more common ferrite magnets is just 4 million to 5 million MGOe.
"The higher the strength of the magnet, the smaller the amount of magnet you need for a particular application," Hadjipanayis told TechNewsDaily. He added that Nd-Fe-B magnets play a crucial part in building ever-smaller electronic devices. (Read "The Common Elements of Innovation.") Three routes to a better magnet Hadjipanayis and his fellow researchers plan to pursue three different routes to possibly achieving a next-gen magnet breakthrough. First, the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory in Iowa plans to investigate new materials based on combinations of rare earths, transition metal elements and some elements that have not been studied before in magnets.
Many such elements require special working lab conditions under high pressures or temperatures, and create additional challenges because they have high reactivity or toxicity. Second, an approach headed by the University of Nebraska will try to develop a rare earth-free magnet. Thi has proven a challenge because existing magnets without rare earths have much lower magnetic strength, but there are some theoretical ideas about changing the crystal symmetry of iron-cobalt alloys by using some non-magnetic elements as substitutes.
Third, Hadjipanayis and the University of Delaware will try to create a new magnetic material that combines the best properties of Nd-Fe-B and iron. The material would ideally end up with high magnetization, and also strongly resist demagnetization.
Simulations have predicted that a next-gen magnet built this way could have a magnetic strength of more than 100 million MGOe, and might also slash neodymium use in magnets by 30 or 40 percent. eeling the pressure All efforts to create such magnetic material have faltered over the past few decades, but Hadjipanayis sees hope in a new bottom-up approach that mixes nanoparticles of Nd-Fe-B at the incredibly tiny scale of just billionths of a meter, or far smaller than the width of a human hair. Other research participants include Northeastern University, Virginia Commonwealth University and the Electron Energy Corporation - one of the last U.S. companies making rare-earth magnets.
The group has put together an ambitious timeline that involves two years for experimenting with materials, before hopefully putting together a new magnet prototype in the third year. "It's a fast-moving program, so I already started feeling the pressure," Hadjipanayis said. "Hopefully we'll have a breakthrough that leads to some permanent magnetshttp://hondarebelforum.com
